I finally completed my next book. Well, the creative writing stage at least. I'm really pretty happy with how this turned out. It''s the first novel I ever wrote in which the main character is female. There is a strong focus on the fantasy world itself, its rich world and atmosphere, from which the adventure springs. For me, fantasy is a way of tapping into your inner, spiritual world and exploring how the soul feels things should be. It's a beautiful escape, but with some gritty parts because darkness is faced and challenged.
If I wanted to write about the state of the world we're living in, I'd write a satire.

After a second free promotion for Sick Nick (Book 1 in the Under-dwellers series) I saw a large growth of downloads. A favourable review from a top 500, "vine voice" reviewer no doubt aided this. I keep wondering if the cover art, with the blue cat's eyes peering out from the darkness, and the odd description haven't been intriguing enough. It's a greater work of literature than Sector Storm, yet this one has had a much harder time selling, perhaps because there really is no official sub-genre for 'supernatural thriller.' I've listed it under 'horror' and 'psychological thriller' (both listed under 'suspense,') since that's as close as the available categories get. Not all books fit neatly into a particular sub-genre, and not many artistic authors write that way.
If only I had more time and money to devote toward marketing...but, I don't. Hopefully my upcoming book will reinvigorate things. I've got fifteen chapters written now. It's building to the big climax. After that, a great deal of editing will follow (for both creative improvement and spelling/grammar mistakes.) It's a long and unpleasant side of writing; reading over every line of the entire book, over and over again, still amazed that you can find mistakes. This book is looking very promising though. It has a mystical charm about it, yet it's set in a rich world full of wonders and dangers. It centres on love and loyalty, and ultimately it's about following one's heart through to the end (or for some, discovering it.) Hopefully I can find a nice cover within my budget that can do it justice :) |
